local area . . .

Grasmere is situated at the very heart of the Lake District National Park. With its 19th Century Lakeland stone buildings and outstanding mountain scenery in every direction, it has become a favourite spot for both visitors and locals alike. It has an air of gentle tranquillity that many of our guests come back to year after year. Its central position makes it an ideal place from which to set out and explore this unique area, or to visit some of the local attractions.

The lake, which gives the village its name, lies just to the South and has the benefit of some lovely low-level walks around it, including that along Loughrigg Terrace, which can produce some stunning views. The lake-shore path has recently been upgraded to make it suitable for all abilities.

There is also the beautifully situated Faeryland tea gardens overlooking the lake, with the opportunity to hire a rowing boat if you feel so inclined, or just sit and watch the world go by. Equally attractive is the small, but beautifully formed Loughrigg Tarn, used recently for some of the filming for the film “Miss Potter”.

For those looking for something a bit more strenuous, a variety of interesting climbs start from the village, including Helm Crag, Silver How and Helvellyn. Only slightly further afield lies the grandeur of the Langdale Pikes and the challenge of England’s highest peak – Scafell Pike.

Once homes to William and Mary Wordsworth, you can visit Dove Cottage and nearby Rydal Mount to see for yourself why this area stimulated so much literary talent. The parish church of St Oswald’s is worth a visit in its own right, but it is also the location for the Wordsworth family graves.

The literary and artistic talents continue today with names such as Heaton Cooper (with a Gallery in the centre of the village), and Taffy Thomas who has founded the Northern Centre for Storytelling. In addition readers of The Times have voted our local bookshop as the best independent bookshop in the UK.

Other attractions in the village include the famous Grasmere Gingerbread, which is still made in the building that was once the village school, and Barney’s Newsbox - the shop with one of the biggest selections of jigsaws in the world!
